Manchester United forward Anthony Martial will continue to be assessed ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United after being ruled out to face Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League night.

The 26-year-old made his first Red Devils start in over a year at Everton last Sunday but was forced to withdraw 29 minutes in - his third injury in as many months.

Asked for an update, Erik ten Hag said: “Not today, we will see how it develops to Sunday.”

He added: “I have had several talks with him about that. It’s disappointing for him.

“I think for the quality, in all the minutes he played he did very well, even on Sunday. He played well. Good assist for Antony for the first goal and also in the pressing he was very good and I think he was an important factor in we play that well in the first half.

“But obviously he fell out and that’s a disappointment for him and the team as well.”

That could see Cristiano Ronaldo handed only his second Premier League start of the campaign after scoring his 700th career goal at Goodison Park last time out.

Ten Hag is already without Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Donny van de Beek and Brandon Williams, while Scott McTominany is banned for the visit of Newcastle after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season.
