Man United dealt fresh injury concern v Newcastle United - and issue Marcus Rashford update

Manchester United will assess Marcel Sabitzer’s fitness ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The midfielder, on loan from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, has been suffering from knee pain, according to Austria boss Ralf Rangnick.

Sabitzer scored twice in Austria’s 4-1 win over Azerbaijan last week but was an unused substitute during last night’s 2-1 victory against Estonia on Monday night.

Speaking ahead of the Estonia game, Rangnick revealed the 29-year-old had missed training. He said: “In the end, it is a question of pain and pain tolerance for both Marcel and Gernot [Trauner].

“Of course, we hope that Marcel will do well, especially after that first game in Linz. At the moment, I’m optimistic that it can work. But, at the end of the day, it’s also a question of whether Marcel feels ready for it himself. At the moment, I am assuming he’ll play.

“It made more sense to leave them out [of the session] again, just to give them one more day, but there are other candidates.”

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford could return in time to face Newcastle this weekend after returning to light training. Rashford, the Red Devils’ top scorer this campaign, withdrew from the England squad due to a toe injury.

“Marcus Rashford has started his recovery at Carrington after sustaining an injury in our last fixture, the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham,” a Man United statement read.

“Marcus was able to get out on the grass at our training base on Monday but the Reds’ leading goalscorer could only take part in a small session, away from the main group.

“There was no ball work involved for the 25-year-old, who scored his 27th goal of United’s season with a long-range beauty against Real Betis, ensuring he netted in both legs of the Europa League tie with the Spanish side.”

As well as Sabizter and Rashford, Erik ten Hag has a few other injury concerns. Here’s Man United’s injury list in full:
