Manchester United hand devastating transfer blow to Newcastle

Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Manchester United star Jesse Lingard have been ended after the midfielder was told to stay at Old Trafford.

The Magpies made two unsuccessful loan bids for the England start earlier this month and hopes were raised that they could finally get a deal completed ahead of Monday’s 11pm deadline.

A third offer was submitted on Monday afternoon with Newcastle offering a pay a loan fee of around £3million with a £4million payment to follow if they preserve their Premier League status this season.

However, the Red Devils have now told the 29-year-old he will not be allowed to depart and he will see out the remainder of his contract with his boyhood club.

Lingard has played around 26 minutes of Premier League football since November and has made just two starts in any competition so far this season.

The likes of Spurs, Leicester City, Burnley and West Ham United have been linked with a January move for Lingard - but Newcastle looked to be the only club to make a decisive move for his services.

That move seemed to receive a boost over the weekend when Red Devils interim manager Ralf Rangnick gave the all-clear for a deadline day switch - but that decision has now been overruled by the club’s hierarchy.

The England midfielder is now certain to leave the 13-time Premier League champions on a free transfer at the end of the season and could now agree a pre-contract agreement with clubs abroad.
