Manchester United are reportedly considering a bid for former Liverpool and Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in a move that would cast doubt over Martin Dubravka’s future at Old Trafford.

Belgian international Mignolet enjoyed a successful nine-year stay in the Premier League helping Liverpool to two Champions League Finals and also appeared in the finals of the Carabao Cup and Europa League during his time at Anfield. The arrival of Brazilian star Alisson saw Mignolet return to Belgium with Club Brugge and he has become a three-time Jupiler League winner with the Blauw-Zwart.

He has also impressed in the Champions League and former Belgium international Rene Vandereycken believes he has shown Reds manager Jurgen Klopp made a mistake in authorising his departure, telling Het Belang van Limburg: “(Mignolet’s) performances in recent years, and certainly now in the Champions League, only confirm that (Klopp made a mistake). Mignolet is having a brilliant Champions League campaign. His presence is a great asset for Club. Thanks to him, they can get through difficult moments. That’s not luck, that’s a quality.”

Mignolet’s form with Brugge has alerted Manchester United and Belgian outlet Het Laaste Nieuws has claimed the 13-time Premier League champions made a £6m offer to bring him back to the Premier League during the summer transfer window. The Red Devils finally secured a backup option to first-choice keeper David de Gea when they confirmed a season-long loan deal for Newcastle United star Martin Dubravka - but the report claims the interest in Mignolet remains very much alive.

Dubravka has endured a frustrating time since moving the Old Trafford and is yet to make an appearances in any competition for Erik ten Hag’s side. The Slovakian international has been an unused substitute in four Premier League games and three Europa League ties but has not played a minute of competitive action. That means he will struggle to meet the criteria to trigger a permanent move at the end of the season and the Red Devils’ reported interest in Mignolet means his long-term future is in doubt.
