Former Manchester United and England star Gary Neville has named Newcastle United as one of the clubs he hopes can ‘disrupt’ the Premier League elite this season.

Defending champions Manchester City will head into the new campaign looking to claim a fifth title in the last six seasons as their dominance continues under Pep Guardiola.

Only Liverpool’s first Premier League title win during the 2019/20 season has prevented Guardiola’s men from claiming a clean sweep during that time and they look set to challenge once again this season.

The two sides have moved ahead of their Premier League rivals over the last three seasons and are both firm favourites to top the table at the end of this campaign.

The likes of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester United will hope to close the gap on the top two as the six clubs look to continue their dominance of the upper-reaches of the Premier League.

However, Sky Sports pundit Neville has named Newcastle as one possible candidate to threaten to break into the elite as they look to progress during their first full season under the ownership of a PIF-led consortium.

Speaking to The Overlap Live Fan Debate for SkyBet, the Manchester United legend said: “I would want that top six disrupted, we need Everton, Newcastle, with the money that they’re going to throw at this, we need that top six to be disrupted.

“It’s good for the league, good for the competitiveness, it’s good that they don’t get the power base set so that they then think that they take all the Champions League money every single year and then that gap doesn’t just come become between Premier League and Championship, it comes between top six and fourteen.

“We need that blend right the way through, West Ham with the owners they’ve got, David Moyes is achieving the absolute heights.”
