The clock is ticking for Newcastle United in their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Palace have turned down multiple bids from the Magpies for Guehi - the most recent understood to be worth £65million including add-ons. He remains Eddie Howe’s No.1 defensive target ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

Indeed, there was renewed hope on Monday night when Mail Online reported that an agreement was close following fresh talks over a £70m fee - a figure that would be a club-record signing for United and represent the Eagles’ biggest-ever sale.

But less than 24 hours later, the 24-year-old was back in action for the Eagles, playing a full 90 minutes and captaining his team as they beat Norwich City 4-0 at Selhurst Park to advance into the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Now, that doesn’t exactly suggest Guehi is any closer to moving to St James’ Park, while the player himself isn’t shying away either. Guehi took to Instagram after the game, writing: “W under the lights! 🦅”

Guehi’s short message comes after Palace boss Oliver Glasner was asked about the centre-back’s wave to Palace supporters at the end of the game.

Glasner replied: “Nice try! You know that I am 50 tomorrow and I think I have one wish, and that is that I don't have to answer questions about the transfer window so you can decide if you give me a gift or not."

Meanwhile, Howe was asked about Guehi specifically on Tuesday morning to which he replied: “I am not going to comment on individual players”.

On transfers in general, the Newcastle head coach said: "There's no problem with backing or support. There never has been. It's the [PSR] rules we're trying to abide by and every decision we make has a consequence for the future so we have got to make sure we are making wise decisions and not leaving ourselves in a vulnerable position again further down the line. That's why these decisions are complex.

“It's not quite as simple as being backed. There's backing there. Everyone wants the same result at the football club, but it's making the best decisions for the long-term."
