Newcastle United transfer target Marc Guehi wished former teammate and close pal Conor Gallagher “all the best” following his £36million move to Atletico Madrid.

Gallagher’s move to the La Liga side looked to have fallen through last week following the collapse of Chelsea's move for Atletico striker Samu Omorodion. The 24-year-old returned to the Blues’ Cobham centre and trained on his own as he waited for an update on his future.

And a transfer was revived earlier this week with Joao Felix arriving in the opposite direction for a reported £42million. Both deals were confirmed on Wednesday.

It ends Gallagher’s 18-years association with Chelsea having first joined the academy aged six. The midfielder, who has been regularly linked with Newcastle, has penned a five-year contract at the Wanda Metropolitano.

“To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true,” Gallagher said in a farewell message. It's been an absolute honour every time I put on the shirt, and it was a dream come true to captain the team on many occasions. I loved every moment. These memories will last forever.

"I appreciate all the love and support from the fans. Hearing the chant of my name at the Bridge is a special feeling, and the banner you displayed meant the world to me. Thank you for everything. I wish the club all the best for the future, and I hope to see you all soon at Stamford Bridge!"

Newcastle ace Kieran Trippier was understood to have advised Gallagher to sign for Atletico while on international duty. The right-back spent two-and-a-half successful years on Tyneside before arriving at St James’ Park in 2022. Gallagher will become the first Englishman to arrive at the Madrid club since Trippier.

A huge part of Gallagher’s footballing journey so far has been spent with Guehi, with the pair featuring at academy level together, and at Swansea City, Crystal Palace and England.

Sending a message to Gallagher via Instagram. Guehi said: “Love it. All the best, brother.”

Time will tell if Guehi also completes a transfer this summer. Newcastle have submitted four bids for the Euro 2024 star, the latest understood to be worth £65m including add-ons, but an agreement is yet to be found .

Talks between the two clubs remain open but the Magpies have been looking at alternative options in case a deal can’t be reached. Palace are already losing one centre-back with Joachim Andersen set to join Fulham for £30m.
