Mehrdad Ghodoussi was in full agreement with fellow co-owner Jamie Reuben following Newcastle United’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.

In front of a bouncing St James’ Park, Eddie Howe’s men started on the front foot and were awarded a penalty eight minutes in.

Bruno Guimaraes’ shot struck Jakub Kiwior’s arm but the decision was controversially overturned by referee Chris Kavanagh after he reviewed the incident at the VAR pitchside monitor. Kavanagh deemed the ball to have hit the Polish defender’s thigh before hitting the arm.

Little under five minutes later, you could have guessed the outcome. Martin Odegaard’s 25-yard strike handed the visitors the lead before an own goal by Fabian Schar inside the remaining 20 minutes wrapped up the result.

With Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak both seeing their efforts hit the post in either half, and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale pulling off some really strong saves, Reuben felt Newcastle missed a bit of luck.

He tweeted: “Obviously disappointed with the result but what a privilege it is to come to SJP these days, the atmosphere was just electric- thank you . Can’t fault the team for their intensity and work rate too sometimes you just need a bit of luck #WeAreUnited @NUFC.”

Ghodoussi was among those to support Reuben’s post-match assessment. He said: “Couldn’t agree more”.

United remain third in the Premier League table despite the defeat, although are looking over their shoulder a little after fifth place Liverpool closed the gap on the top four to one point over the weekend.
