Mehrdad Ghodoussi perfectly sums up Newcastle United’s defeat to Liverpool

Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi reacted to the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool on social media.

Mehrdad Ghodoussi believes Newcastle United’s narrow defeat to Liverpool is a sign of how far the club has come.

Not so long ago were the Magpies deep in Premier League relegation trouble following just one win from their opening 20 matches.

However, since the turn of the year, Eddie Howe’s side have incredibly surged away from danger, winning 10 and drawing two matches.

Indeed, United’s 1-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s men at St James’ Park on Saturday was just their fourth of 2022, and their first home loss since mid-December.

There was some element of disappointment at the full-time whistle, certainly from Howe, who felt his players weren’t at their best “individually”.

Having that feeling against a team competing for an unprecedented quadruple is a big sign of progress, according to co-owner Ghodoussi.

He tweeted: “You know we’ve come a long way when we’re so disappointed not to beat Liverpool #nufc #howaythelads @nufc #nextseason”

The Magpies started the game well but Liverpool seized control when Naby Keita opened the scoring on 19 minutes.

Miguel Almiron had an equaliser ruled out for offside, though Martin Dubravka produced a number of saves to keep the scoreline down.

Heading into the summer, the quality of a Liverpool is a reminder of how much investment is needed before one day challenging them for the Premier League crown.

Next Sunday is set to be like that too when Howe’s side travel to face league leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
