Newcastle United’s 6-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur has been voted the best match of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign.

Those inside St James’ Park couldn’t quite believe what they were witnessing when the Magpies raced into a 5-0 lead inside the opening 21 minutes following braces from Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak, plus a goal from Joelinton.

Harry Kane pulled one back early in the second half before Callum Wilson added a sixth. The victory was a massive step as United went on to seal Champions League qualification for the first time in 20 years.

Over the weekend, fans across the Premier League have been voting for their best match, with Newcastle v Tottenham beating Liverpool’s 7-0 win over Manchester United and the Reds’ 4-3 win versus Spurs to face Arsenal 3-2 Bournemouth in the final vote.

While the notorious Toon Polls was quickly on the case, Magpies’ co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi also reached out to supporters to get voting.

Ghodoussi tweeted: “Can we all please vote for this one winning the best game of the season would be the cherry on top of an already incredible season @nufc#nufc@fun88@jamiereuben⁩ ⁦@PIF_en⁩ ⁦@samfendermusic#premierleague”

Indeed, Ghodoussi’s wish came true with the Premier League announcing the winner on Monday afternoon.

“From eight matches down to one, we have reached our destination to find out the best single match of the 2022/23 Premier League season,” a Premier League post read.

“You, the fans, have voted and decided that Newcastle United‘s incredible 6-1 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur was the most entertaining fixture of the campaign. It was chosen ahead of the other finalist, Arsenal’s 3-2 victory over AFC Bournemouth.”

After the game, Spurs sacked interim boss Cristian Stellini and refunded their supporters who made the trip to the North East.
