Newcastle United top scorer Miguel Almiron has stepped up his recovery from a thigh injury - as he aims to be back in action before the end of the month.

The Paraguayan hasn’t featured since scoring in the 2-1 win against Wolves on Sunday, March 12 after sustaining a thigh injury in training.

Almiron stayed on Tyneside while his teammates jetted off to Dubai for the first week of the international. The Magpies’ have 100 per-cent record since returning - beating Manchester United, West Ham United and Brentford to further underline their Premier League top-four credential.

Although United sit third in the top-flight table with the likes of Jacob Murphy stepping up in Almiron’s absence, Howe is keen to get the forward, who has scored 11 goals this campaign, back on the pitch as soon as possible.

And it appears the 29-year-old is making good progress. As per his official Instagram page, Almiron has been back in the gym doing several different stretch exercises. He was also back at the club’s Benton training base this afternoon overlooking the pitches as he enjoyed a meal in the canteen.

There were hopes Almiron would be back ahead of schedule after he was pictured jogging during the international break. However, Howe confirmed prior to the win against Man United that his initial six-week timescale remained accurate.

“I don’t see that changing,” said the Magpies’ head coach. “I’d love it to. I’d love him to beat the timescale given, but I just don’t see it currently.

“He’s making really good progress. I think he’s pain-free. I don’t think there’s any long-term issues. I think it’s just a case of that’s the time it will take for the muscle to fully heal. I think we’re four weeks off (a comeback), maybe slightly less. But yeah, he’s making really good progress.”

Almiron is unlikely to return for Saturday’s Premier League clash at Aston Villa (kick-off 12:30pm) and next week’s Premier League top four six-pointer at home to Tottenham Hotspur.
