The Magpies view Sassuolo’s Rogerio as their primary target and are thought to be in talks with the Italian club, according to 90Min.

However, the report claims that they are also monitoring Genk star, Gerardo Arteaga, as an alternative.

Newcastle have already seen moves for Robin Gosens and Mitchel Bakker fail so are eager to identify a number of different options to ensure they bring someone in before Monday.

A move will depend on any potential deal for Rogerio, but Newcastle fans may want to keep an eye on the full-back over the coming days.

If the Mexican was to join the Tyneside club then he would be reunited with his former teammate, Santiago Munoz.

Who is Gerardo Arteaga?

Gerardo Arteaga joined Genk in 2020 for €3.5 million.

The 23-year-old has made over 50 appearances for the Belgian side and has four assists in the league so far this season.

He has also stared in the Champions League and Europa League - featuring against West Ham earlier in the campaign.

The Mexico international is considered a huge prospect for the future and Het Laatste Nieuws have previously compared him to Roberto Carlos.

If Newcastle aren’t to sign Rogerio then Arteaga could be a very promising signing for them.
