An injury-hit Newcastle team fell to a disappointing 2-0 loss in their most recent Champions League outing against Borussia Dortmund. The Magpies played well in stages of the game, but were unable to carve out the openings needed to break down a stubborn Dortmund backline.

The defeat highlighted Newcastle’s needs for further reinforcements with Tino Livramento acting as a makeshift winger and Anthony Gordon acting as a striker, despite being a more natural winger.

Newcastle’s injury issues were amplified during the game by a slight knock to Callum Wilson, who is a doubt for the game against his former club Bournemouth.

Eddie Howe’s side have performed admirably during this injury crisis and still find themselves sixth in the Premier League table, but it appears increasingly likely that the club will act to sign more attacking players in January and one player who has been identified is Juventus star Federico Chiesa.

TeamTalk claims that the Magpies are preparing an offer in the region of £52m for the Euro 2020 winner as they hope to strengthen their options out wide. Chiesa started his career with Fiorentina in 2016 and quickly established himself as a key figure in the Italian national team within two years of his debut.

The 26-year-old spent four seasons of his career in Florence before making the move to Juventus on a two-year-loan in 2020, which was eventually made permanent in 2022.

Chiesa was a member of the Team of the Tournament during Italy’s trump in Euro 2020 and was viewed as one of the best wingers in world football for a brief period.

The 42-time international has struggled to hit the same heights in recent seasons due to injury, but has shown signs of revived form this season with four goals from 10 matches as his side compete to reclaim the league title.

Chiesa’s improved form has not only prompted interest from the Magpies and the report from TeamTalk adds that both Arsenal and Chelsea have been keeping close eyes on the attacker.
