Sky Sports Italia have suggested the Magpies have offered more for the highly-rated centre-back - but Botman could be swayed to move to Milan due to the presence of director Maldini.

The former Italy defender made over 900 appearances for I Rossoneri and earned 126 caps for his country during a stellar 25-year career at the top level of the game.

The report states that a call to Botman from Maldini could sway the centre-back to snub United’s advances to join Milan.

Newcastle are just one of a number of clubs to be linked with a move for the defender, who has been tipped for a call-up to the Germany squad in the near future.

Freiburg sporting director Jochen Saier told Kicker: “Nico is a special player who has a lot of potential for development.

“The combination leads to interest from big clubs. That’s why we will have to deal with his personal details in the summer with an open mind.”

Kicker have also suggested Borussia Dortmund are considering a move for Schlotterbeck as they look to partner him with Niklas Sule, who agreed a free transfer move from Bayern Munich earlier this week.

Magpies to compete with Premier League rivals for Ligue 1 winger

Reports in Africa have credited Newcastle with an interest in Nantes winger Moses Simon.

The Nigerian international is valued at around £20million by the Ligue 1 club and Leeds United are also believed to be monitoring the situation.

Nigerian outlet Own Goal have suggested the Magpies are ‘locked in talks’ with Nantes and could offer the winger around £100,000 to tempt him to Tyneside.
