Newcastle United set for defender reunion just months after emotional farewell
Newcastle United released the defender at the end of last season.
Charlie McArthur has joined League Two newcomers York City after leaving Newcastle United at the end of his contract.
The Magpies fought off strong competition to sign McArthur from Kilmarnock in the summer of 2022 but the centre-back departed without making a first-team appearance.
The 20-year-old instead gained senior experience in two separate loan spells, spending the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Carlisle United before joining Scottish Championship side Airdrieonians in January for the remainder of the last season.

York were promoted from the National League last season and have strengthened their squad with the permanent arrival of McArthur.
“I'm delighted to be here, delighted to finally get it over the line,” McArthur said. “I found out about the interest, probably a week or so ago and then it moved quick so I'm glad that me and the club managed to get it done quickly and I'm delighted to be here.
“I spoke to the manager briefly and he just explained to me how the club wanted to be and how he wanted to play, and that really kind of made me want to join the club.
“The way the manager wants to play and especially how well the club did last year, it really brought me to York and I'm looking forward to it.”

And it won’t be long before McArthur comes up against some of his former teammates after Newcastle under-21s were drawn into the same Vertu Trophy group as the Ministermen.
McArthur said: “I've already been texting some of the coaches, they've been having a laugh with me so I'm looking forward to playing that game and to play against, again, a good U21 side. But hopefully I can be on the side where we get three points for York City.”
After leaving Newcastle, McArthur wrote: “As I move on to the next chapter of my career, I would like to say thank you to everyone at Newcastle United for the support, opportunities, and memories over the past four years.
“It has been a pleasure to be part of such a special club, and I am grateful to all the staff and players I have worked alongside. I wish everyone connected with nufc all the very best for the future🖤”
