Newcastle United agree deal with 'incredible' player - will go down as one of Eddie Howe's best-ever signings
Newcastle United have agreed a new deal with one of Eddie Howe’s best-ever signings.
Dan Burn is set to sign a new contract at Newcastle United as a reward for his dream season.
When the Blyth-born defender joined his boyhood club from Brighton & Hove Albion for £13million in January 2022, few could have predicted what he has gone on to achieve.
Whether it be centre-back or left-back, Burn has established himself as a regular in the Magpies’ starting XI and formed a key part of the club’s player leadership group.
The 33-year-old scored in the Champions League last season as United beat Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 at St James’ Park. An iconic moment, but not as iconic as his header against Liverpool in March that helped the club win the Carabao Cup and end its 70-year domestic trophy drought.
It was the very next day Burn linked up with England for the first time before making his debut in the 2-0 win over Albania. You could say now say he is an England regular after again being called up to Thomas Tuchel’s squad for June fixtures against Andorra and Senegal.
Dan Burn agrees new contract at Newcastle United
A sensational campaign and one that is set to be capped off with a new contract. Burn’s current deal expires in 2026 but talks have taken place over an extension and according to the Daily Mail, terms have been agreed.
Speaking in October last year, Burn expressed his desire to finish his playing on career before potentially heading into coaching or the media.
Burn said: “I’d love to finish my career here. I’ve moved back home now, my kids are back with their family, we get to see our family a lot and it was always the plan to finish my career here.
“We’ve just got to wait and see, we’ve got a lot of very good players here and we’re going in that upward trajectory so you’ve got to keep trying to go for as long as you can.
“I feel like I’ve been playing well this season, I’m not a player who is just going to be happy being a good trainer and sitting on the bench.I want to play and I do believe I could be playing in this team.”
“The worst thing would be to get to the point after football and have nothing to go into,” he added. “I think you’ve always got to have that plan, especially when you hit 30 because everyone says you’re nearly done then! ’m still really enjoying it, I feel I have a lot of fight left in me to push the lads.
“I’ve started my coaching badges, do little bits of media stuff, bits to keep me ticking over. I’d love to keep doing something with the club when I’m finished, whatever that may be.”
Eddie Howe can’t speak highly enough of Dan Burn
From starting out at Darlington, Burn has climbed through the pyramid. From Fulham, where he had loan spells at Yeovil Town and Birmingham City, to Wigan Athletic and Brighton, Burn has made 148 appearances and counting for Newcastle.
Earlier this year, Howe said: “Without a doubt he’s one of my best signings. He’s been incredible – even better than I thought he would be for us.
“We knew he was talented and would be a difference maker but when you add the leadership skills and consistency, he’s been a tower of strength for us & fundamentally important in everything we’ve done.”
