Newcastle United have reportedly ‘agreed personal terms’ with Monaco defender Axel Disasi ahead of a possible summer transfer.

The £34m-rated Frenchman has been a long-term target for Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag but the Red Devils have yet to make a formal approach to Monaco for the player.

Now Football Transfers report Newcastle have been given the green light to hold talks with the defender, on the understanding he will be in line for first-team football next season.

The report adds the Magpies have ‘offered assurances’ to the player he will play regularly. Eddie Howe has already added AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali to his squad this summer as he seeks to bolster his options for the club’s Champions League campaign.

In an update earlier this week, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported Newcastle and Man United were ‘both exploring Disasi deal’ although no bids had arrived from either club. He also reports the Red Devils have held talks with the player over a possible deal.

Disasi was a key player for Monaco last term, making 49 appearances across all competitions as he scored six goals and provided four assists from central defence.

It was reported last month Arsenal and Chelsea were also weighing up the possibility of signing Disasi but Newcastle and Man United appear to be the two frontrunners.

Diasi is not the first centre-back to be linked with a move to the Magpies this summer as Howe looks to strengthen his options ahead of more games next term.

Sven Botman and Fabian Schär were the first-choice pairing last season with Leeds United defender Robin Koch emerging as a reported target but he has now made a loan move to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Diasi has been capped four times by France and made his professional debut with Ligue 2 side Paris FC before joining Reims. He signed for Monaco in 2020, penning a five-year deal.
