Newcastle United agreed personal terms with £20m-rated star as 2025 transfer approach planned

The Magpies had a £16million bid rejected by the Clarets in June. Reports at the time claimed Trafford had already agreed personal terms over a move but United were unwilling to meet his £20m asking price.

Eddie Howe’s side released Loris Karius in the summer but increased their number of senior goalkeepers to five. As part of Elliot Anderson’s PSR-forced move to Nottingham Forest, Odysseas Vlachodimos moved to St James’ Park in the opposite direction while veteran John Ruddy penned a one-year contract.

That said, Newcastle still hold a strong interest in Trafford. As per Mail Sport, the Englishman is viewed as a long-term successor to Nick Pope, though a January is unlikely with Burnley in the hunt for promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Movement is expected in the club’s goalkeeping department this summer with Martin Dubravka. Mark Gillespie and Ruddy out-of-contract. Pope’s deal expires in 2026.

A dislocated shoulder forced Pope to miss five months of last season. The 32-year-old started all but one of United’s opening 18 games this term but is currently out for a month because of a knee issue.

Dubravka’s return in between the sticks has coincided with back-to-back home wins over Leicester City and Brentford. However, in the background, the Slovakian has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab.

Meanwhile, Trafford had made 20 Championship appearances so far this season, conceding eight goals and keeping 12 clean sheets. The Clarets, managed by former Newcastle captain Scott Parker, currently sit third in the league table, one point below second place Leeds United and four behind leaders Sheffield United.
