Gordon may have only scored four goals and provided two assists during 35 Premier League appearances - but his performances played an instrumental role in his side’s successful battle against relegation from the top flight.

His form led to interest from Newcastle, Spurs and Chelsea as they looked to strengthen their attacking ranks during the summer transfer window - and there were reports all three clubs has offers rejected by the Everton hierachy.

Speaking in the final hours of the transfer window, Toffees manager Frank Lampard insisted the England Under-21 star would remain at the club and challenged Gordon to improve under his management.

He said: “He has showed his worth in the last two games, it is too late. He is going to be special. In the bigger picture, he has an affiliation with the fans. It is a process, can we build around that?

“He is a special player for me. I am delighted.”
