Eddie Howe was tight-lipped when asked about Bruno Guimaraes’ contract situation at Newcastle United.

It’s been reported this week that the Magpies have opened contract talks with the Brazilian after an excellent opening 14 months on Tyneside.

United signed the midfielder from Lyon for around £35million in January 2022, and would arguably triple their money if they were sell him in the near future.

But the 25-year-old remains a major part of the club’s ambitious plans, though Howe was unable to confirm if extended contract talks were indeed underway.

“Not to my knowledge,” said Howe when asked about if contract talks had advanced. “I’ve been preparing for the game. I’m not sure on that.”

Guimaraes’ form for Newcastle brought praise from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who described him as a “top-class” player.

Man City, like Chelsea, who, according to the Daily Telegraph, enquired about Guimaraes in January, are among a number of clubs keeping tabs.

But Howe wants to see the Brazilian stay at St James’ Park for a long time.

“He’s a really important piece [of the project],” Howe said. “When you look at our team, he’s an unique player, you not going to find too many players like him in the way he receives the ball, his technical delivery under pressure and his eye for a creative pass.

“He’s very important, at a really good age - he’s only going to get better because his attitude is top class. He’s got a great mix of qualities and it is my desire to see him stay here for a long time.
