Newcastle United remain keen on securing a summer deal for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana - but face competition from at least two of their Premier League rivals.

With ongoing speculation over Bruno Guimaraes’ future at St James Park and fellow Brazil international Joelinton at something of an impasse during contract talks, there are suggestions the Magpies hierarchy are keen to boost Eddie Howe’s midfield ranks as he looks to move on from what has been a challenging season at St James Park.

Guimaraes seemed to commit his future to the Magpies earlier this season when he penned a new contract - but the reported presence of a £100m release clause has meant speculation over a summer move to Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool has never been too far away from the headlines. Despite that talk, Guimaraes has always stressed how much he is enjoying life on Tyneside and praised Magpies supporters for the backing he has received ever since he moved to St James Park just over two years ago.

Speaking after putting pen to paper on a new deal in October, he told the club website: "I'm so happy here. It's a place that is so comfortable to be and I hope to keep making the supporters happy and helping the team do well. That's my goal, because there are no words to describe how happy I am to be here. I remember in my first interview, I said I wanted to play for this club in the Champions League and now it's happening. We are doing so well and when I look around the pitch at my team-mates, I am so proud of them all. I'm proud of everyone; the team, the staff, the owners and the fans.”

United remain keen on strengthening in the middle of the park during the summer transfer window and have been monitoring the progress of the likes of Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White and Atalanta duo Ederson and Teun Koopmeiners in recent months. However, Football Insider have claimed the Magpies are ‘very keen’ on Everton and Belgium star Onana and, despite interest from Arsenal and Manchester United, are ‘at the front of the queue’ for the £60m-rated midfielder.
