Newcastle United call-up 17-year-old to Germany squad as six players missing

Several youngsters have travelled to Germany with Newcastle United’s first-team in the absence of key internationals.

Sweden pair Alexander Isak and Emil Krafth have become the latest players to link up with the squad for the five-day training camp at Adidas’ HQ in Herzogenaurach after being handed an extra week off.

However, the Magpies remain without Martin Dubravka, Fabian Schar, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier, all of whom competed at Euro 2024, plus Miguel Almiron and Bruno Guimaraes following their involvement at the Copa America.

That has saw Eddie Howe hand opportunities to some of the club’s under-21s pack, and perhaps the most notable inclusion is 17-year-old Trevan Sanusi.

Sanusi joined from Birmingham City last summer having attracted interest from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

After representing the club’s under-21s and England under-17s last season, the pacey winger was handed a professional contract in May.

“It’s overwhelming and a dream come true to sign my first professional contract as I’ve been working for it for my whole life,” Sanusi told newcastleunited.com. “I’m really excited to keep pushing on and prove to everyone who gave me that contract.

“I stayed humble and didn’t expect it. I kept working hard until I got the contract, which I have now, but I’ll keep on working and won’t be stopping.

“I see a very good pathway in the Academy and trying to make it into the first-team. I back myself to play as well as possible and try to do that, following in the footsteps of those who have done so this season.”

Sanusi will hope to impress Howe, as will others such as Jamie Miley, Jay Turner-Cooke and Cathal Hefferan. The latter joined from AC Milan last summer and was involved in post-season friendlies against Tottenham Hotspur and the A-League All Stars in Australia.

Garang Kuol is also present with the squad. He too appeared in his homeland of Australia but is set to leave on loan again after struggling for minutes in previous spells at Hearts and FC Volendam.

Following the trip to Germany, Newcastle will face Burnley in a training ground friendly and Hull City at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, July 27. The squad then fly out to Toyko for matches against Urawa Red Diamonds and and Yokohama F. Marinos before ending their pre-season at St James’ Park for the Sela weekender. Girona and Stade Brestois are the opposition.
