Newcastle United can sign £30m England international for nothing next summer - Spurs also interested

Angel Gomes has reportedly told Lille he was to leave next year amid Newcastle United interest.

A former Manchester United academy product, the midfielder became the first player born in the 21st century to play Premier League football. His Red Devils debut was a landmark moment but he soon moved on to pastures new to secure first-team football.

Ligue 1 outfit Lille signed Gomes on a free transfer in 2020 before immediately loaning him out to Boavista. A spell in Portugal gave the former Man United prospect the tools to kick on once he returned to France.

Gomes has since gone on to become a top performer at Lille and recent earned his first England caps. Now a stylish, deep-lying playmaker, the 24-year-old was part of Lee Carsley’s under-21s setup - giving him a pathway to the Three Lions squad.

Impressing against the Republic of Ireland and Finland last month put Gomes in the shop window to Premier League clubs. Newcastle have been linked with the England star and, given the FFP/PSR climate, a deal makes sense.

Gomes is out of contract in 2025 and does not expect to pen a fresh Lille deal. Various sources claim he prefers returning to England, with Tottenham Hotspur also expressing interest.

However, a stumbling block could emerge should the Red Devils enter the race. Gomes revealed in a recent interview that he cannot rule out a Man United return.

“There will always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course, it’d be difficult to say no,” he told The Times when asked about rejoining his former club. “As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad, I know that playing in the Premier League is not the be-all and end-all.”
