Newcastle United can sign £40m striker for free - on one condition

Newcastle United were quoted £40million for the former England international last summer.

Everton have delayed confirming a final decision on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s future.

Calvert-Lewin is out of contract at Goodison Park on June 30 and has attracted interest from Newcastle United in previous seasons. The Magpies held talks over a £40million transfer last summer that would have seen Yankuba Minteh head in the opposite direction in a PSR swindle.

However, negotiations broke down. Minteh ended up joining Brighton & Hove Albion for £33m and Elliot Anderson moved to Nottingham Forest with Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos swapping the City Ground for St James’ Park as both clubs complied with PSR.

Everton release Dominic Calvert-Lewin statement

A year on and Newcastle have the opportunity to sign Calvert-Lewin for free. While the Toffees confirmed new contracts have been offered to Seamus Coleman and Idrissa Gana Gueye, a club statement revealed talks are ongoing with Calvert-Lewin’s representatives.

The 28-year-old has scored 71 goals in 274 appearances for Everton with his most recent, and perhaps final, appearance coming at St James’ Park for the final day of the season last month.

The club statement read: “Everton can provide an update on players who are out of contract at the end of this month in line with the Premier League publication of clubs’ retained and released lists.

“The Club is offering new contracts to Seamus Coleman and Idrissa Gana Gueye, while we continue to liaise with representatives of Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the current deals of all four players expiring at the end of June.

“As previously confirmed, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Ashley Young, Joao Virginia, Asmir Begovic, Mason Holgate and Neal Maupay will leave Everton when their current contracts expire at the end of this month, with loanees Jack Harrison, Jesper Lindstrøm, Orel Mangala and Armando Broja returning to their parent clubs.”

Newcastle United in a similar position with Callum Wilson

The situation isn’t too dissimilar to Callum Wilson’s after Newcastle confirmed on Friday that discussions were ongoing over a potential new deal. The 33-year-old is also out of contract on June 30, five years after joining from AFC Bournemouth for £20m.

Wilson has scored 49 goals in 130 appearances but has endured a frustrating campaign with injuries, restricting him to just three starts. His only goal came in the FA Cup fourth round win away to Birmingham City, while his last Premier League goal was over a year ago in May 2024.

The striker’s limited appearances mean he did not automatically trigger a one-year extension. Newcastle have also passed up the option, instead entering talks over an incentive-based contract.

Newcastle United striker search

Newcastle are keen on signing a striker this summer, though that want will become a need should Wilson be released. Alexander Isak is the Magpies main striker but with European football to contend with next season, Eddie Howe knows he will need to manage the Swede’s fitness.

While Calvert-Lewin may be an option, United are currently exploring other options. An enquiry has been lodged for Brighton & Hove Albion’s Joao Pedro though his rumoured £70m price tag could prove to be a stumbling block.
