Newcastle United chief holds talks with £40m star as four-year contract expected - six players set to leave

A look at when every Newcastle United player’s contract expires as new Joelinton deal close.

Newcastle United are reportedly close to agreeing a new contract with Joelinton after a series of positive meetings with the Brazilian and his representatives.

Magpies head coach Eddie Howe admitted earlier this year it is a “possibility” Joelinton could be sold this summer if a new deal isn’t agreed. The six-year contract he signed when joining from Hoffenheim for a then club-record £40million transfer in 2019 is due to expire in 2025.

However, United are likely to avoid such scenario with the Daily Telegraph reporting that Joelinton, after weeks of productive talks, is expected to pen a new four-year deal and become one of the club’s highest earners alongside countryman Bruno Guimaraes.

Howe previously revealed Joelinton’s contract situation was an “absolutely priority” and that he was “desperate” to keep the 27-year-old.

“That’s always been in my mind as an absolute priority to try and get him to stay at the club long-term," said Howe. "I see that as hugely important.

“We’re still trying from the club’s side. We’re desperate to keep him, we know his qualities and what he brings, but I don’t think there has been a major update or any major change to the situation.

"I don’t know if we’re looking to make a statement, we’re just looking to try and keep a very good player at the football club for everyone’s benefit.

"He always plays with a massive heart, commitment so we’d love to keep him long-term. I feel I have a very good relationship with him, I feel we’ve built up a trust between us. Personally, I’d love to see that."

According to the Telegraph, contracts talks have largely led by head of recruitment Steve Nickson, the chief scout who first recommended the Brazil international to Newcastle, while CEO Darren Eales and Amanda Staveley have also been heavily involved.

With Joelinton set to extend his stay at St James’ Park until 2029, NewcastleWorld takes a look at when every Newcastle player’s contract expires, including the six who, as it stands, have three months left to run on their existing deals:
