Only 18 seconds had gone when the Magpies took the lead through Joe Willock on his first appearance since April. Unfortunately for the midfielder, he had to come off in the 15th minute because of a thigh injury.
And from then, Forest grew into the game and equalised shortly after half-time via Jota Silva. It wasn’t until the introduction of Tino Livramento, Sean Longstaff and Anthony Gordon on the hour-mark when Newcastle began to threaten.
United had chances to win it, but to penalties it was. It started badly when Joelinton saw his spot-kick saved by Carlos Miguel, however misses from Ibrahim Sangare and Taiwo Awoniyi sealed Eddie Howe’s passage into the third round.
After the game, Reuben said: “Tough match but a good win - appreciate once again the tremendous @NUFC support tonight and look forward to Sunday #WeAreUnited”.

“For the love of god get some players in please Jamie,” said one supporter. Another wrote: “Please can we get new signings through the door at St James’ Park, Jamie? Eddie Howe needs reinforcements.”
Newcastle have recruited five new signings this summer, goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, defender Lloyd Kelly and striker Will Osula, while Lewis Hall’s loan move from Chelsea turned permanent for an initial £28million.
Talks are ongoing with Crystal Palace over Marc Guehi, but the Magpies have so far had four bids rejected. Fresh reports claim a £70m package is being discussed but the clock is ticking.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer said earlier this week the failure to get a “statement signing” over the line, i.e Guehi, would reflect badly on sporting director Paul Mitchell and CEO Darren Eales.
