Newcastle United co-owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben heaped praise on Eddie Howe’s side after marking their Champions League return with a point against AC Milan.

Following a 20 year absence from Europe’s elite competition, the Magpies travelled to the home of the seven-time winners and held out for a goalless draw.

They did have goalkeeper Nick Pope to thank. His nine saves across the evening kept Milan at bay, though some last ditch and brave defending was required in the closings stage to see out the result.

The draw was certainly welcomed by the 3,900 travelling Geordies who were up in the gods at the San Siro. And for on-watching owners Ghodoussi and Reuben, that was no different.

Providing their thoughts after the game, Ghodoussi referred the term ‘gladitor’, which, of course, is a phase commonly linked to the Roman Empire.

“We came, we saw, and then took a point #wewerethegladiators“, he posted on X.

Reuben, meanwhile, thanked the supporters.

“Strong point away from home,” he said. “Thank you to our traveling supporters for making the long journey.

United return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon against Sheffield United. They then face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup before hosting Paris Saint-Germain on October 4, four days after they face Burnley in the league.
