“Welcome to the best club in the world, Nick”. That was Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi’s welcome message to Nick Pope following his move from Burnley.

The 30-year-old was confirmed as the club’s second senior signing of the summer as he put pen to paper on a four-year contract at St James’ Park.

An undisclosed fee was agreed with the Clarets on Tuesday. Less than 48 hours later, Pope travelled to the North East to undergo his medical and agree personal terms.

The England international has been brought in to rival Martin Dubravka for the No.1 jersey after six seasons at Turf Moor, where he made 155 appearances.

Head coach Eddie Howe was so delighted to land Pope that he publicly thanked the owners in a club statement confirming the former Charlton Athletic man’s arrival.

Howe said: “Nick is an exceptional Premier League and international level goalkeeper so I’m very pleased to be adding strong competition to a very important position.

“There has been a lot of interest in him from other clubs this summer, so I’d like to thank our owners and everyone behind the scenes for getting us ahead of the competition.

“I’m delighted he is joining us as we prepare for the exciting challenge ahead.”

Evidently, a lot of hardwork has gone in from sporting director Dan Ashworth and the owners to seal Pope’s highly-sought signature.
