Newcastle United co-owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben labelled the 3-0 victory at Manchester United in the Carabao Cup as “incredible”.

Several injuries and tired bodies as a result of the busy schedule forced Eddie Howe to name eight changes to his starting XI as Emil Krafth, Matt Ritchie, Joe Willock and Martin Dubravka made their first starts of the 2023-24 season.

Only Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and Anthony Gordon retained their places from Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers as Tino Livramento, Paul Dummett, Lewis Hall and Matt Targett were recalled to the starting line-up.

Adversity was staring Newcastle in the face just three minutes in when Targett was forced to withdraw with a hamstring injury and join the club’s eight-man absentee list. But it was his replacement Miguel Almiron who opened the scoring.

And from then on, the result rarely looked in doubt. Hall grabbed his first goal since from Chelsea in the summer before Willock put the game to bed on the hour-mark.

It was only Newcastle’s second win at Old Trafford since 1972, and 7,000 travelling Geordies were their to witness it.

Reacting to the win on social media, Ghodoussi posted: “Incredible performance by the lads, so proud of the resilience and fight. We are united, we are one. @NUFC#nufc#carabaocup Also a special thanks to the away fans, you sang your hearts out - your support means everything to the team.”

Reuben also used the word “incredible” before also posting “United”.

Following the game, it was confirmed Newcastle, having dumped both Manchester clubs out of the competition, will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the quarter-finals on December 19.
