Jay Turner-Cooke has signed a new two-year contract extension with Newcastle United - after joining Tranmere Rovers on loan on deadline day.

The 19-year-old’s temporary switch to the League Two club was confirmed after the Magpies’ Carabao Cup semi-final win over Southampton on Tuesday night.

He’ll spend the rest of the campaign at Prenton Park having committed his longer-term future to Newcastle.

“I’m absolutely buzzing. Ever since I came here, I’ve loved it and I feel I have went from strength to strength,” Turner-Cooke told the club website. “This is the next step in my career to, hopefully, big things with Newcastle.

“All I ever wanted was to stay at Newcastle and thankfully, I’ve been able to extend my contract. Now, it’s time to push on towards that next step.

“I can’t wait to go out on loan. I think it will do me the world of good, playing first-team football and I think that’s what I’ve needed. I’ve played with the under-21s for the last two seasons so I can’t wait for the next challenge.”

The attacking midfielder, who joined from Sunderland in January 2021, made his senior debut during the 5-0 win against Al Hilal in December before featuring in the 2-1 friendly win over La Liga side Rayo Vallecano at St. James’ Park.

“He’s gone to a really good club, a really good manager,” Howe said on Turner-Cooke’s loan move. “We hope it’s a spell where he really learns and develops and takes everything you can from a loan spell, whether it’s good or bad the experience will benefit his career.”
