Eddie Howe admits Newcastle United are light on bodies in midfield after injuries to Bruno Guimaraes and Elliot Anderson.

Guimaraes twisted his ankle in the early stages of the Magpies’ 1-0 win over Fulham. He tried to continue but was left in tears before being replaced at half-time.

Howe revealed after the game Guimaraes isn’t the only fresh injury to emerge this week, with Anderson picking up a suspected calf injury.

It means the Magpies have just three fit central midfielders - Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock. Asked if that will impact the club’s January transfer plans, Howe replied: “We’ll see. I’ll first assess the injury.

“We are light in midfield, there’s no doubt about that – today we were missing Elliot as well, who’s another player who can play in there, with – we think - a minor calf problem.

“We’ll get the diagnosis on Bruno’s injury and then make a decision.”

Guimaraes had two rounds of physio treatment, firstly when the injury happened and secondly to put strapping around his ankle.

Should Howe have taken the Brazilian off sooner?

Howe said: “Yes, probably with hindsight, but the player wanted to stay on and as long as it’s not a concussion, I always tend to go with the player because the players know how difficult the Premier League is and they know their bodies better than do at that moment.

“But he was probably limping for five minutes at the end of that first half. It’s always a difficult one right on half-time to make a change. I like to try to do that in the calm of half-time to make a proper decision. He played very well in the first half as well despite the injury.”
