Newcastle United are set to miss out on Chelsea striker Timo Werner - according to widespread reports.

The Magpies had identified the Germany international as a potential loan signing as they look to boost Eddie Howe’s attacking options before the transfer window closes next month.

There had been speculation suggesting a temporary move would only take place if Chelsea were willing to subsidise a large proportion of Werner’s £272,000 weekly wage.

United’s hopes were raised when the 26-year-old discussed his lack of game-time at Stamford Bridge and hinted he would be ready to secure a move away.

He told The Mail: “First of all, the most important thing is that I am happy. I am happy when I play and score goals. That’s the fact.

“That’s what I should take care of and the other things will come. I could be happy everywhere. It is hard to say (why I’ve struggled for game time).”

The Evening Standard has now reported Werner has fallen out with Blues manager Thomas Tuchel and was left out of their matchday squad for Saturday’s narrow win at Everton.

The report suggests Werner will now depart Stamford Bridge over the coming days after former club RB Leipzig opened talks over a loan deal to take the striker back to the Bundesliga.

The move could deal a double blow to the Magpies transfer plans with Werner’s departure leaving questions over Chelsea’s willingness to allow fellow frontman Armando Broja to leave the club on loan.

The Magpies had been hopeful of securing a season-long deal for the Albanian international and could now be forced to turn their attentions elsewhere.

One new name being linked with a move to St James Park is Colombia international striker Luis Muriel.

The 31-year-old has scored goals for the likes of Sevilla, Udinese and Sampdoria throughout his career and has just entered the final 12 months of his contract with Atalanta.

Muriel has scored 59 goals and provided 22 assists since joining Atalanta from Sevilla in a £19million deal in 2019 and featured for the Serie A club during their recent 1-0 defeat in a pre-season friendly at St James Park.

AC Milan, Juventus and Roma are also believed to be showing an interest in securing his signature.
