Newcastle United fans will be packing their overnight bags ready for their trip to Wembley Stadium for the Carabao Cup final this weekend.
The charge for European qualification in the Premier League will be put on pause as all attention turns to the club’s chance to win its first piece of major silverware since 1955.
Here are some of the latest news and headlines coming from St James’ Park today.
‘That would suit’: Scottish star tips Kieran Tierney for Newcastle move
Scottish football star Alan Hutton has tipped wantaway Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney for a move to Newcastle United this summer.
The full-back is struggling for game time at the Emirates Stadium this term having been usurped by ex-Manchester City man Oleksandr Zinchenko, who was signed by Mikel Arteta last summer.
Reports are touting a £30 million Newcastle bid is in the offing for the 25-year-old who hasn’t started for the Gunners since Boxing Day.
Ex-Rangers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he could. I have always liked Kieran Tierney as a footballer. It is hard for me to say but when he was at Celtic he was outstanding. For Scotland as well.
“I knew it was going to be a big jump going down to the Premier League but I knew he was ready for it. Unfortunately, they have brought in Zinchenko who has been outstanding.
“But I think somewhere like Newcastle, where he would be loved, they would love the way he plays, I think that would suit. For me, I think he is a better player overall than their current options.“
Mixed signals on Hugo Ekitike future
The long-term future of Newcastle United transfer target Hugo Ekitike is still to be decided as mixed reports emerge about his time at Paris Saint Germain.
The striker was the subject of major interest from Newcastle during the final few days of last season’s January transfer window and enquiries were once again made last summer.
The Magpies had agreed a deal with the Reims man in January 2021 but the star pulled out, reportedly citing United’s battle against relegation to justify his decision.
Ekitike joined PSG on loan last summer but has struggled for game time against the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
That has led to speculation Ekitike could be allowed to depart on loan next season, with journalist Giovanni Castaldi suggesting the PSG hierarchy was unhappy with his performances and behaviour.
Meanwhile, FootMercato’s Santi Aouna has stated the Ligue 1 club does not want to allow the talisman to head out on loan and no talks have been held over such a decision.
There are also reports in France suggesting Ekitike is set to have further competition for a place in the PSG lineup with France internationals Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Thuram both linked with a move to Paris.
