Newcastle United consider summer move for player who recently made shock North East visit

Newcastle United are reportedly considering a move for Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele.

The former Borussia Dortmund winger will head into the final 12 months of his current deal at the Camp Nou this summer and Italian news outlet CalcioMercato have claimed a £43.7m release clause will become active during that time.

The report links Serie A giants Juventus and Inter Milan with a move for Dembele but also suggests both clubs will find the fee ‘out of reach’, paving the way for a whole host of Premier League clubs to edge ahead of them in the race for his signature.

Newcastle, Chelsea and Manchester United are all suggested as possible destinations for Dembele, who was heavily linked with a move to all three clubs last summer before confirming he would stay with Barcelona for the season.

There have been reports the Catalan giants will look to offer Dembele a new deal over the coming months and the winger has indicated he would be willing to remain with the club and agree and extension to the two-year contract he signed last summer.

He told Goal: “I signed a new contract at Barca four months ago and I’m happy here, I want to keep working and improving at Barcelona. I am good here, I am happy in Barcelona, I like my life here. The coach trusts me and the board too.”

The winger did make a surprise visit to the North East earlier this week when he sat alongside Sunderland chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus as the Black Cats saw their play-off hopes take a blow with a 2-1 defeat against Sheffield United at the Stadium of Light.
