Newcastle United have reportedly suffered a blow in their pursuit of one of their key targets for the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are believed to be keen to added a centre back, centre midfielder, winger and a striker to their ranks at the end of the season as they look to build on the impressive progress they have made during their first full season under the management of Eddie Howe. However, it is a left-back that is said to be near the top of the United hierachy’s summer wishlist, despite the fine form of Dan Burn.

The likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Raphael Guerreiro and Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo have both been mentioned as possible targets - but it is Arsenal star Kieran Tierney that is believed to be United’s main target. Gunners manager Mikel Arteta discussed the former Celtic’s defender’s current situation at the Premier League leaders as he continues to force his way into their starting lineup on a regular basis.

Speaking last month, the Spaniard revealed he had held talks with the Scotland international, saying: “(It was) Very good because we talked and we discussed the situation and we had a very similar opinion about that. He knows his role – under me he’s played a lot, more than any other player probably compared to the previous players at the club in the last three years and he understands the situation and he needs to challenge the situation.”

Despite speculation suggesting Tierney could be allowed to depart this summer, Football Insider have now claimed the defender is on a list of four players Arteta is hoping to retain for what he hopes will be a defence of the Premier League title as his side continue to lead the way during the final months of the current season.

The report states defensive duo Tierney and Rob Holding, attacking midfielder Emile Smith-Rowe and striker Folarin Balogun, who has also been linked with a move to St James Park, are all set to remain at the Emirates after Arteta made an early call over the makeup of his squad next season.
