Callum Wilson could face the rest of the season on the sidelines as he will require surgery on his pectoral tendon.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who claim Eddie Howe will be without the 31-year-old for nine to 12 weeks. Wilson - now a major doubt for England's Euro 2024 campaign - suffered the setback in the final throes of Newcastle United's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Injuries have proven his kryptonite since arriving on Tyneside almost four years ago. An alarming stat is how Wilson has missed 34 per cent of Newcastle’s Premier League games in three-and-a-half seasons - a figure set to become worse.

The win at Forest was his first start since returning from a calf injury that ruled him out for three matches. Other setbacks this term include a hamstring strain - placing a heavy burden on £63million man Alexander Isak.

It was just last month when Howe dismissed suggestions Wilson could leave. Several outlets reported that Manchester United and Chelsea were considering a move for the Toon number nine.

“We are waiting to see what happens,” Howe told reporters. “I don’t want to talk about individual player names, that is not right. It is a complex situation (the transfer market).

“I’ve had those conversations with Callum. He is 100% committed, just like Kieran Trippier is. That’s why I’m surprised by the noise around Callum.”

“He’s currently injured, we’ve got one fit striker and he is our second striker and we are desperate to get him back. From his and our perspective, there is nothing in him leaving.”

“That’s been a strange one really because there’s been a lot of speculation regarding Callum and I’ve seen some of it, probably not all of it but a lot of it. I think it has been unfounded. Callum is 100 percent committed just like Kieran (Trippier).”
