The game was won by Alexander Isak’s 53rd-minute strike but after the game, Howe provided an update on some of the players left out of the squad altogether.
Callum Wilson wasn’t risked because of hamstring tightness while Sven Botman has a knee problem. Meanwhile, Dan Burn and Martin Dubravka were unwell.
Newcastle also picked up knocks during the match with Isak withdrawing with a tight calf, half-time substitute Bruno Guimaraes twisting his ankle and Paul Dummett departing with cramp.

“Yeah my record against him [Pep Guardiola] isn’t good so it’s nice to win but most importantly it’s not about that, it’s about trying to progress in the competition,” said Howe on the win over City.
“I’m delighted with the efforts of the players. Very difficult game for us in that first half, I thought they played very well but we defended very well because we had to.
“Second half was a totally different performance and the balance of the team was much better. Delighted with everyone’s commitment to the game.”
