Chris Wood will be assessed by Newcastle United’s medical team after the striker injured his rib on international duty with New Zealand.

The 30-year-old started the All Blacks’ 2-0 defeat to Australia on Sunday but was forced to withdraw in the 32nd minute.

Wood felt “something pop” in his rib early on and despite heavy strapping by the on-field medics was unable to continue.

“I went in for a challenge and something popped in my rib,” the £25million January recruit said. “It hurt to run and breathe, so I had to come off.”

The former Burnley striker has started just once for Newcastle in the Premier League this season with his other six appearances coming as a substitute.

However, if his injury is to keep him out a period of time, the Magpies could go into Saturday’s meeting at Fulham with just one recognised striker.

Callum Wilson is set to return from a hamstring injury but Alexander Isak is being assessed after withdrawing from the Sweden squad with a knock.

Meanwhile, United are sweating over Bruno Guimaraes’ fitness after the midfielder returned to Tyneside early with a groin issue.

The Brazilian wasn’t risked during the 3-0 victory over Ghana on Friday before leaving the camp ahead of Tuesday’s friendly with Tunisia.
