Newcastle United have a fresh injury concern heading into next Sunday afternoon’s Premier League clash at home to Liverpool (kick-off 4:30pm).

Joelinton limped off just before the hour-mark and was replaced by Sean Longstaff. The Magpies lost 1-0 to last season’s triple-winners following Julian Alvarez’s 31st minute goal.

Asked about the Brazilian’s injury, Howe replied: “No, no news. I know what you know,” Howe said. “He didn’t move well when he came off the pitch. Fingers crossed he’s OK. “

On the game, Howe said: “We’re disappointed with the result, of course. I thought the performance was OK. I’m disappointed with bits of the first-half, I felt we were a yard off where we needed to be. Against a team like Manchester City, it’s very difficult to implement a press that’s effective because they’re so good technically.

“I thought we were much better at that aspect of the game in the second half, I thought we disrupted their rhythm a lot better but we just didn’t have the quality today, technically I thought we were a little bit loose.

“In and around their box, our quality that is normally there was slightly off.

“On tonight’s evidence, there is still stuff for us to improve for sure. We’ll go away and analyse the game to try and do that [bridge the gap between Newcastle and Man City]. I was a little bit disappointed overall because we know we can be better than that but that’s the challenge we face.”
