And the Magpies will be unable to call on Fernandez, who has suffered a fresh injury, though it is not thought to be serious.

The Argentine wasn’t in the matchday squad from Saturday’s win against Brighton and has been absent from training this week.

Howe revealed: “Fede picked up a very slight side strain.

“We don’t think it’s serious. It’ll keep him out for a week to 10 days.”

Ryan Fraser looked to be carrying a knock when replaced by Bruno Guimaraes on 79 minutes against the Seagulls.

However, the in-form Scotland international is set to be involved at St Mary’s as Howe confirmed “no major” injury concerns.

Matt Ritchie has also returned to training after missing the last six games with a knee injury.

“Nothing of major concern,” Howe said when asked for the injury latest. “There are a few niggles after the Brighton game.

“Matt Ritchie has returned to training, so that’s a really good thing but no major problems.”
