Newcastle United are set to be without Miguel Almiron for the next three weeks after he sustained an injury in training.

NewcastleWorld understands the 29-year-old went for an MRI scan on Thursday, and sources in Paraguay today have confirmed Almiron has suffered an injury.

Almiron has enjoyed his best-ever season in a Magpies shirt since joining from MLS side Atlanta United in January 2019, with his 11 goals seeing him top the club’s goalscoring ranks.

Following a dry spell, the wide forward was dropped from the starting XI against Wolverhampton Wanderers last Sunday for Jacob Murphy but scored a 79th-minute winner after coming on as a substitute.

“I suppose if you’re asking just for today, he’s really attacked the situation,” said Howe. “The team was in need and I had no doubt that Miggy would come on in the right frame of mind.

“I know the lad so well and he’s a team player, he’s not about himself. The team needed him and he’s come on and made a big contribution. But his attitude is first-class every single day, I see that first-hand, so I had no doubt about how he would respond today.”

Paraguay boss Guillermo Barros Schelotto revealed Almiron had not been called up for international duty after suffering an injury. Almiron will stay with Newcastle as they jet off to Dubai during the break.

“Miguel Almiron was injured yesterday and will be out for 3 weeks and it is not necessary for him to come,” said Schelotto. “We received the report from his club (Newcastle United) and we saw the video of the injury.”
