Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has reportedly been ruled out of Italy’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine this evening (kick-off 7:45pm).

The Magpies’ £52million summer signing started his country’s 1-1 draw with North Macedonia on Saturday and has been training at former club AC Milan ahead of facing Ukraine tonight.

However, according to Sky Italia, Tonali won’t feature because of a “slight muscle injury”. Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel and Roma midfielder Leonardo Spinazzola are also out.

The 23-year-old has started all four of Newcastle’s 2023-24 Premier League matches so far and starred during the 5-1 win opening day victory over Aston Villa.

However, defeats to Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion have made it a disappointing start to the campaign for Eddie Howe’s men, who finished fourth in the league last term.

Howe’s side host Brentford at St James’ Park on Saturday evening before Tonali is due to return to the San Siro on Tuesday as United play their first Champions League match in 20 years.
