While the likes of Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron jetted off on international duty, the majority of Eddie Howe’s squad remained on Tyneside during the break.
And past fortnight has allowed the Magpies to get at least one player back from injury with Alexander Isak overcoming a broken toe.
"Alex has trained and trained well,” Howe confirmed at his pre-match press conference. “He trained at the start of this week and looks good so at this moment in time he'll be in contention.”
There is, however, less certainty over Callum Wilson, who is yet to feature this campaign because a back and hamstring issue.
Howe explained: “Callum has also trained but with Callum we'll continue to assess him day-by-day, we’ve got to try and make the right decision.
“As I say, it’s a day-by-day thing and we’re obviously in communication with him. The big thing with Callum is when we get him back we want to try and keep him back for as long as possible so we’ve got to make the right call.”
Howe is taking a similar approach with Lewis Miley, who hasn’t played for seven months, firstly because of a back problem and then a fractured metatarsal.
Kieran Trippier has been ruled out for a few weeks due to the hamstring injury he picked up at Everton last time out. NewcastleWorld understands Dan Burn picked up a knock in training earlier in the week but should be fine to feature.
