Eddie Howe - and defender Lloyd Kelly - visit former club AFC Bournemouth (kick-off 2pm) as his Magpies team go in search of back-to-back wins following last Saturday’s 1-0 opening day victory over Southampton at St James’ Park.
The three points, however, did come at a cost after Fabian Schar was shown a red card on the half-hour mark for clashing with Ben Brereton Diaz.
The sending was labelled as harsh by Howe and many others, with replays showing Brereton Diaz had flung himself to the floor after the pair squared up to each other. That led to suggestions that United could appeal the decision but there has been no official word, meaning Schar is set to serve a three-match ban.
Emil Krafth is expected to step in for Schar while Newcastle continue their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. Four bids have been submitted already but there is growing optimism that an agreement is close.
But who - or who isn’t - on the bench will be of interest amid fresh doubt surrounding Kieran Trippier’s future.
As reported on Thursday, the 33-year-old is open to leaving Newcastle and explore other opportunities, three-and-a-half years after arriving from Atletico Madrid. He was an unused substitute last weekend after Tino Livramento was selected ahead of him at right-back.
