The Magpies are believed to be keen to sign a centre-back this summer - but they face competition for one reported target.

Newcastle United and Arsenal have once again been credited with an interest in Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi - but have been put off by a £60m valuation placed on the England defender.

The former Chelsea academy centre-back has forged a fine reptutation for himself since joining Palace in a reported £20million deal during the summer of 2021. Since making the move across London, Guehi has gone on to make over 80 appearances for the Eagles and he earned the first of four England caps when he made his Three Lions debut in a 2-1 win against Switzerland in March last year.

Speaking after handing Guehi a maiden senior call-up, England manager Gareth Southgate said: “I’ve been very impressed with on and off the ball. In the biggest games he’s been very calm and we know a lot about him throughout our development teams as well. He’s a junior World Cup winner. There are some centre-halves that are pushing and were very close but we’ve added Marc and Ben White this time and we think it’s a good opportunity to see two slightly younger players and see how they cope with being with us.”

Guehi missed out on a place in England’s World Cup Finals squad for the tournament in Qatar last winter but his impressive performances for Palace have led to interest from several Premier League clubs, with Newcastle, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all said to be keen on a move for the 22-year-old.

However, Football Insider have now claimed Liverpool are also ready to make a move for the centre-back as Jurgen Klopp continues to embark on a hectic summer transfer window following the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and former Magpies target Dominik Szoboszlai.
