A reported Newcastle United target has dropped a hint over his future ahead of the January transfer window.

Newcastle United could be handed an opportunity to solve their goalkeeping issues after one reported target was said to be keen on a move to St James Park.

The Magpies are facing up to life without number one stopper Nick Pope for the foreseeable future after he suffered a serious shoulder injury in the recent 1-0 home win against Manchester United. The England international is expected to miss the vast majority of the remainder of the season after being ruled out for up to five months.

United manager Eddie Howe delivered a worrying update ahead of Wednesday night's crucial Champions League clash with AC Milan after he revealed it was 'slightly unclear' whether Martin Dubravka would be fit to face the Serie A giants.

The Slovakia international made his first Premier League appearances this season in defeats at Everton and Tottenham Hotspur over the last week and was expected to be handed an opportunity to stake a claim to replace Pope throughout his spell on the sidelines.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius could be handed a chance to make only his second appearance for the Magpies and his first since he started last season's Carabao Cup Final defeat against Manchester United.

There have been suggestions United could look to add another stopper to their ranks during the January transfer window and links with Tottenham Hotspur veteran Hugo Lloris and Arsenal and England keeper Aaron Ramsdale have been widely reported in recent days.

Another possible target, former Manchester United star David de Gea, is reported to have indicated his desire to talk to the Magpies about a possible move as he looks for a new club following his departure from Old Trafford during the summer.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano told Kick: “I saw one about Newcastle’s goalkeepers. Newcastle are considering options for a new goalkeeper. Newcastle have been unlucky with injuries. Nick Pope is injured, but also Dubravka isn’t 100% fit. De Gea is waiting, De Gea would love to sign for Newcastle, De Gea is just waiting for a call."

De Gea has also given a direct hint he is ready to make a return to action by posting a pair of goalkeeper gloves in the middle of a pitch on his Instagram account. He posted the image along with the caption 'Work, work, work'.
