Eddie Howe has provided a fitness update on Sandro Tonali after an injury ruled him out of Italy’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine.

On Tuesday Sky Italia reported the 23-year-old wouldn’t feature in the match after acquiring a ‘slight muscle injury.’

Tonali has since returned to Tyneside where he had a scan to try and figure out the full extent of the injury.

“I think he felt his thigh in training so he’s come back in and he’s had a scan,” said Howe. “There’s a slight injury there, it’s nothing too serious.”

Howe was unable to say if it is enough to rule him out of Saturday’s Premier League game, however it might provide an opportunity for the Newcastle manager to mix things up after a disappointing run of games which saw the Magpies lose to Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton.

Newcastle host Brentford at St James’ Park on Saturday evening before Tonali is due to return to the San Siro on Tuesday as United play their first Champions League match in 20 years.
