Newcastle United fans were sent into meltdown on Tuesday evening when Lyon attacking midfielder Lucas Paqueta flew to Tyneside.

However, it is not for the reason supporters want, with the 24-year-old simply visiting former teammate and good friend Bruno Guimaraes to celebrate his wife’s birthday.

Due to their close relationship off the pitch, it has perhaps been no surprise to see Paqueta tentatively linked with reuniting with Guimaraes at United this summer.

The pair developed a deadly partnership at Lyon together, and that has also continued at national team level with Brazil in recent months.

Guimaraes has gone on record to say it’d be his “dream” to see Paqueta join Newcastle, something that NewcastleWorld asked Eddie Howe about earlier this month.

“I have signed players from many different sources over the years,” Howe said.

“I’ve never cut off any recommendation from anybody. But of course, I’d have to go through the right process of watching and analysing the player to see if he’s right for the team.

“I’m aware of Bruno’s relationship, not just with him (Lucas Paqueta) but many of his ex-players.

“Certainly, it helps to have players play at the very highest level because those relationship and opinions can be very valuable.”

Paqueta’s trip to Tyneside will only fuel speculation about his future, and leave Newcastle fans asking more questions about a potential summer move.

A photo has since emerged on social media of Paqueta in Guimaraes’ back garden wearing Newcastle’s black third kit.

The 24-year-old is understood to be open to leaving France this summer but his season isn’t over yet, with still Clermont Foot to play on Saturday.
