Eddie Howe has revealed Fabian Schar wanted to play on against Arsenal - despite appearing to be momentarily unconscious.

The Magpies central defender was involved in a nasty collision with striker Eddie Nketiah just seconds into the second-half.

After landing heavily, Schar looked to be out cold on the ground before the United medical team rushed to his side.

Thankfully, the Switzerland international was able to get to his feet but was denied permission to play on based on current protocols.

Howe explained: “Fabian, I think, is OK. He was taken off due to protocols.

“He wanted to stay on but I think it was the right decision.”

The 30-year-old was replaced by captain Jamaal Lascelles, who, alongside Dan Burn in central defence, kept Newcastle’s eighth clean sheet of the campaign.

Howe’s side won the game courtesy of an own goal from Ben White and a goal from Bruno Guimaraes on 85 minutes.

Great to see Callum Wilson back

Callum Wilson, starting for the first time since December, starred in the 2-0 victory in front of a pumped up St James’ Park crowd.

Asked about Wilson’s performance, Howe said: “An immense performance when you consider how long he’s been out and the type of injury he had.

“To deliver that first game back, I can’t say enough positive words about that.

“When you see behind the scenes and you see how he’s conducted himself and how he’s worked, it doesn’t surprise me because I’ve seen it times before but then you’ve got to back it up with the performance and I thought he gave a very good display that really helped the team.

“Full credit to him.”
