Newcastle United finalise 'amazing' deal as six players set to leave this summer - as it stands

Joelinton has committed his long-term future to Newcastle United and there are still many more contract decisions to be made.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe couldn’t hide his delight at the “amazing news” of Joelinton’s contract extension.

An official club statement on Thursday confirmed the news Howe and Newcastle fans were hoping for. Following months of speculation, Joelinton has indeed committed his long-term future to the St James’ Park club.

The Brazilian had 18 months left on his previous deal with Howe admitting in January it was “a possibility” he could sold this summer, otherwise the club risked losing him for free a year later.

But speculation surrounding Joelinton’s future has been put to bed and the player can now, without distraction, build on his unique Tyneside journey, which has saw him transform from a £40million flop as a striker to a midfield powerhouse.

“Amazing news for all of us, such an important player,” said Howe. “It wasn’t straightforward but great that he sees his future here and I think it is a big bit of news for us, a big boost.

“It was a big contract for him. He’s at an age where it is a pivotal moment in his career really. I’ll make this clear, he’s never doubted his love for Newcastle or his want to stay but of course everything has to be right.

“It is a complex process when representatives are involved. It’s never straightforward but all through the process he has been excellent with his conduct and the message to me is he always wants to stay.

“We’re very grateful to everyone involved that we were able to get there.”

His transformative coincided with Newcastle’s journey from battling relegation to qualifying for the Champions League. Joelinton has appeared 179 appearances, scored 25 times and made his Brazil debut. What else can he achieve?

“I think he will go on to become one of the biggest icons that the club has had,” said Howe. “I think his relationship with the supporters is quite unique because he’s gone from difficult moments to iconic status, and I’d love to see that continue and grow.

“I think for Joe also, he has international ambitions and just breaking into the Brazil squad is a big moment for him. But I think first and foremost for Newcastle, he has to get fit, win his place back and continue to showcase his talents.

Although Joelinton has committed his future to United, a number of players, either this summer or next, are out-of-contract. Here’s when every player’s contract expires, with six (as it stands) set to leave at the end of the campaign:
